LD1635

An Act to Streamline Municipal Referenda Recount Initiation

Complete·6/5/25

This bill streamlines the process for initiating a recount in municipal referenda in Maine.

This bill amends the referendum recount procedure in Maine. It requires an automatic recount if a municipal referendum passes or fails by less than 1% of all votes cast, including blank ballots. The bill also specifies that a recount can be requested by 10% or 100 registered voters, whichever is less. The application for a recount must include the legal name, mailing address, residence address, and telephone number of the official representative of the registered voters requesting the recount. An opposing official representative can be established by an affidavit signed by registered voters.
