LD1302

An Act Regarding the Number of Voters of a Municipality Required to Petition for Consideration of Deorganization of That Municipality

Complete·6/2/25

Maine LD1302 modifies the voter petition requirement for deorganization of a municipality.

Maine LD1302 removes the minimum number of voters required to petition for a municipal meeting to discuss deorganization. Previously, the petition had to be signed by at least 50% of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election, but not fewer than 10 voters. Now, the petition can be signed by any number of voters, as long as it meets the 50% threshold. If the petition is valid, municipal officers must call a special meeting to discuss deorganization and decide on a procedure.
