An Act to Limit the Liability of Gun Shops That Provide Firearm Hold Agreements

Complete·6/13/25

Gun shops in Maine can hold firearms for veterans and first responders under specific conditions, with immunity from liability.

This bill allows gun shops in Maine to take possession of firearms from veterans of the United States Armed Forces or first responders under certain conditions. The gun shop must determine the owner, enter into a firearm hold agreement, keep the firearm separate from inventory, and contact the owner monthly. The gun shop is immune from liability for returning the firearm unless the return is unlawful. The Department of Public Safety must create a firearm hold agreement form by January 1, 2026.
