Louisiana SB500 modifies the process for medical malpractice claims against healthcare providers. Claimants can choose to file a certificate of merit in court or have their claim reviewed by a medical review panel. If a claimant opts for a certificate of merit, they must file it within 90 days of all defendants filing their answer, or the action will be dismissed. The filing of a request for review by a medical review panel, if chosen by the claimant, is not reportable to any healthcare provider, the Louisiana Patient's Compensation Fund, or any other entity. Effective August 1, 2026.
