Louisiana SB500 amends the medical review panel process for malpractice claims against healthcare providers.

Louisiana SB500 modifies the process for medical malpractice claims against healthcare providers. Claimants can choose to file a certificate of merit in court or have their claim reviewed by a medical review panel. If a claimant opts for a certificate of merit, they must file it within 90 days of all defendants filing their answer, or the action will be dismissed. The filing of a request for review by a medical review panel, if chosen by the claimant, is not reportable to any healthcare provider, the Louisiana Patient's Compensation Fund, or any other entity. Effective August 1, 2026.
