Louisiana SB433 requires Medicaid managed care organizations to cover FDA-approved weight loss medications for Medicaid recipients over 18 with a body mass index of 30 or higher and at least one associated condition, or a BMI of 35 or greater. The coverage is subject to prior authorization, limited to six months initially, and requires clinical improvements for continued coverage. The Louisiana Department of Health and Medicaid managed care organizations are prohibited from imposing step therapy requirements or additional restrictions. The law takes effect on January 1, 2027.
