Louisiana SB397 enacts provisions for filling vacancies in state and local elected offices caused by retirement, resignation, or removal. It prohibits officials who have retired, resigned, or been removed from being appointed or elected to fill the same office, unless the removal was due to a defect that can be legally cured. The law does not apply to judgeships and does not affect the supreme court's authority to appoint judges. Effective August 1, 2026.
