Establishes an inactive well fee assessment credit (EG INCREASE GF EX See Note)

Introduced·2/26/26

Louisiana HB596 creates a credit for operators who plug inactive wells at least 10 years old, reducing their assessment obligations.

HB596 establishes a credit for operators who plug wells that have been inactive for at least 10 years. The credit, calculated at $4.50 per foot of well plugged, can be applied dollar-for-dollar against the operator's inactive well assessment. To qualify, wells must be plugged and abandoned in compliance with department rules and pass final inspection. The Department of Natural Resources is authorized to promulgate rules to implement this credit.
