Louisiana HB440 proposes a constitutional amendment to authorize parish governing authorities to increase the homestead exemption by up to an additional $5,000. The current homestead exemption is $7,500, bringing the total potential exemption to $12,500. This amendment also includes provisions for additional exemptions for veterans and their surviving spouses, as well as first responders. The amendment will be submitted to voters in the November 3, 2026, election and, if approved, will take effect on January 1, 2027.
