Directing the secretary for children and families to request a waiver from supplemental nutrition assistance program rules that would allow the state to prohibit the purchase of candy and soft drinks with food assistance.

Introduced·1/16/25

Kansas HB2015 directs the secretary for children and families to request a waiver from the USDA to prohibit the purchase of candy and soft drinks.

Kansas HB2015 amends state law to direct the secretary for children and families to request a waiver from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to exclude candy and soft drinks from the definition of eligible foods under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). If the waiver is granted, the state will prohibit the purchase of candy and soft drinks with food assistance. If the waiver is not granted, the secretary must request it annually until it is granted.
