SB3005 amends the Illinois Human Rights Act to expand the relief available to plaintiffs in civil rights cases. It allows plaintiffs to seek punitive damages and all forms of relief available in tort actions, including emotional distress, pain and suffering, and loss of a normal life. The bill also provides for other forms of relief such as cease and desist orders, actual damages, hiring, reinstatement, promotion, backpay, fringe benefits, and attorney fees and costs. The penalties for civil rights violations are adjusted based on the number of prior violations committed by the respondent.
