SB2828 amends the Counties Code and the Illinois Municipal Code to update building inspector requirements. Beginning January 1, 2027, building inspectors must hold specific certifications from the International Code Council or be credentialed through an equivalent program. Inspectors have a grace period of 18 months from the date of hire or January 1, 2027, whichever is later, to acquire the required certifications. Inspectors performing plumbing inspections are exempt from these requirements and must be licensed under the Illinois Plumbing Licensing Law.
