Beginning January 1, 2027, building inspectors in Illinois must hold specific certifications from the International Code Council or be credentialed through an approved program. Inspectors have 18 months to acquire the required certifications. Those performing plumbing inspections must be licensed under the Illinois Plumbing Licensing Law. Municipalities must maintain copies of inspectors' certifications.
