SB2185 amends the Unified Code of Corrections to mandate that within 24 hours of admission to a correctional institution, each committed person must undergo screening for substance use disorders, including opioid use disorders. If an individual screens positive, is diagnosed with an opioid use disorder, or exhibits withdrawal symptoms, and medication-assisted treatment is clinically indicated, they may consent to commence medications for opioid use disorder. The Department of Corrections must provide these medications and ensure continued access upon reentry into the community.
