Amends the Public Utilities Act to allow construction of advanced nuclear reactors in Illinois starting January 1, 2026.
The bill amends the Public Utilities Act to permit the construction of advanced nuclear reactors in Illinois, defined as nuclear fission reactors with significant safety improvements compared to older reactors. Beginning January 1, 2026, construction of these advanced nuclear reactors with a nameplate capacity of 300 megawatts or less can commence if the entity constructing the reactor has obtained all necessary permits and licenses. The Illinois Commerce Commission must consider cost savings to customers when determining if construction promotes public convenience and necessity.
