The bill amends the Criminal Code of 2012 by redefining first and second degree murder. It removes the felony murder provisions from the first degree murder statute. First degree murder is now defined as killing an individual without lawful justification when the offender either intends to kill or do great bodily harm, or knows that their acts will cause death. Second degree murder is defined as committing or attempting to commit a forcible felony, other than first degree murder, and causing the death of a person in the course of or in furtherance of the crime.
