Illinois SB1784 amends the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 to modify detention rules for minors. It raises the minimum age for detention from 12 to 13 years old. Minors 12 years old or younger cannot be detained in a county jail or municipal lockup for more than 6 hours. Instead, they may be held accountable through a petition under the Minors Requiring Authoritative Intervention Article or a community mediation program. For minors 13 years old and older, detention is limited to 12 hours unless the offense is a crime of violence, in which case it can be up to 24 hours.
