Illinois SB1670 amends the Family Bereavement Leave Act to provide employees with up to one week of unpaid bereavement leave for the death of a covered companion animal. This leave is in addition to the leave for family members. The bill defines "covered companion animal" as an animal designated by the employee as a pet. Employees can take up to two weeks of leave for multiple companion animal deaths within a 12-month period. Bereavement leave for family members remains at up to six weeks for multiple deaths within the same period.
