SB1619

PUBLIC DEFENDER-COOK COUNTY

Introduced·2/4/25
Introduced Text

Public Defender in Cook County can represent minors in custodial interrogations and immigration cases.

The bill amends the Counties Code to allow the Public Defender in Cook County to represent minors during custodial interrogations and in immigration cases. In counties with a population over 3,000,000, the public defender can represent noncitizens in immigration cases, but only if they arise within the county's geographical boundaries or involve county residents. Representation in immigration cases is limited unless the county board authorizes otherwise. The public defender can also represent minors in cases involving those under 15 years old at the time of the offense.
