Illinois SB1591 amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to define "leader-follower work zone vehicle" as a motor vehicle equipped with an automated driving system and remotely connected to another vehicle for coordinated movement within line of sight of the operator. The bill authorizes the Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority to use these vehicles in highway construction or maintenance zones to create a safety system for workers. The operator of the leader-follower work zone vehicle is deemed the driver and operator of the motor vehicles in the safety system.
