SB1347

Illinois SB1347 allows voters to petition for a referendum to dissolve a local government unit.

Illinois SB1347, known as the Citizens Empowerment Act, enables registered voters to petition for a referendum to dissolve a local government unit. If approved, the dissolving unit's assets, personnel, and liabilities transfer to the receiving unit. The petition must be filed with both the dissolving and receiving unit's governing boards at least 122 days before the next general election. The referendum passes if three-fifths of voters in both units approve it. The Act also outlines the petition's form, notice requirements, and ballot placement.
