Illinois SB1223 amends the Fair Patient Billing Act to restrict medical creditors and debt collectors from contacting patients about unpaid charges if an appeal of a health insurance decision is pending or was pending within the last 180 days. It also prohibits these entities from initiating lawsuits or arbitration proceedings against patients regarding unpaid charges under similar conditions. Additionally, the bill mandates that hospitals offer uninsured patients information on charity care options, regardless of their immigration status or residency.
