SB0191

SCH BUS-SEAT SAFETY BELTS

Complete·8/1/25

Illinois SB0191 mandates seat safety belts in all new or leased school buses starting January 1, 2027.

Illinois SB0191 amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to require each designated seating position in any newly purchased or leased school bus to be equipped with a combination pelvic and upper torso seat safety belt system. This system, also known as a 3-point seat safety belt, must be in good operating condition and meet all applicable federal standards. The provision does not apply to school buses legally registered in another state and displaying valid registration plates if the bus is not operated in Illinois on a regular basis and is used for cultural, tourist, athletic, or similar activities.
