Illinois SB0191 mandates safety belts for all seating positions in newly purchased or leased school buses starting January 1, 2027.

Illinois SB0191 amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to require that each designated seating position in any newly purchased or leased school bus be equipped with a combination pelvic and upper torso seat safety belt system, also known as a 3-point seat safety belt. These belts must be in good operating condition and meet all applicable federal standards. The requirement does not apply to school buses legally registered in another state if they are not operated in Illinois on a regular basis and are used for cultural, tourist, athletic, or similar activities for students from out-of-state.
