Merrick, born in Mobile, Alabama, and raised in Tampa, Florida, graduated from Bloomingdale High School and Florida A&M University. He was a dedicated coach at St. Agnes Catholic School, Marian Catholic High School, and Rich Township High School, coaching basketball and flag football. Merrick also coached in the Amateur Athletic Union circuit and founded the Power Moves Elite basketball program.
