The Illinois House of Representatives congratulates Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, on his election as the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church. Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV studied mathematics and theology, and served as a missionary in Peru. He was ordained in 1982, appointed apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in 2014, and became a bishop in 2015. He was named a cardinal in 2023 and elected pope on February 6, 2025.
