Illinois HB5788 requires voter registration officers to verify applicants' citizenship using a secure database by January 1, 2027.
HB5788 amends the Secretary of State Act and the Election Code in Illinois. It mandates that, starting January 1, 2027, voter registration officers must verify applicants' citizenship status using a secure database maintained by the Secretary of State. If the database indicates that an applicant is not a U.S. citizen, the officer must mark the application as "incomplete" and notify the applicant that they may not vote unless they present evidence of U.S. citizenship to the county clerk.
