Introduced·2/6/26
Introduced Text

HB5583 amends Illinois law to expand eligibility for the First Time Weapon Offense Program and allows for retroactive review of eligibility for those.

HB5583 amends the Unified Code of Corrections to expand eligibility for the First Time Weapon Offense Program. It removes the requirement for State's Attorney consent for participation in the program. A defendant is no longer ineligible for probation solely due to being legally ineligible for a Firearm Owner's Identification Card if no other statutory disqualifications apply. The program duration is set between 6 months and 24 months.
