Illinois HB5489 amends the Illinois Domestic Violence Act of 1986 to change how law enforcement officers respond to domestic violence involving juveniles. If a law enforcement officer believes a person has been abused, neglected, or exploited by a family or household member, they must take reasonable steps to prevent further harm. If the alleged offender is a juvenile, the officer may choose not to arrest the juvenile and instead may divert the juvenile or assist the juvenile and their family in finding alternative placement.
