HB5219

Illinois HB5219 establishes safe zones around polling places, ballot drop boxes, and election authorities to prevent civil arrests of voters.

Illinois HB5219, also known as the Safe Voting Act, amends the Election Code to create election safe zones. These zones protect voters from civil arrests while they are going to, remaining at, or returning from polling places, ballot drop boxes, or election authorities. The act defines civil arrest as an arrest not related to criminal activity, a judicial warrant, or a judicial order. Violators of this provision are liable for civil damages for false imprisonment. The act also outlines provisions for civil damages and limitations on the provision.
