Illinois HB4862 requires school districts to adopt policies and procedures to prevent and address secondary traumatic stress, also known as compassion fatigue, in the workforce. By January 1, 2028, each district must incorporate elements such as a commitment to mental health, a district-wide workforce mental health committee, regular assessments, and appropriate resources and training. The State Board of Education must also publish links to resources, self-assessments, and best practices on its website.
