Illinois HB3691 recommends that every occupied school building be tested for radon by January 1, 2029, and every five years thereafter. New schools must be built using radon-resistant techniques. If radon levels are 4.0 pCi/L or above, mitigation is recommended within two years by a licensed professional. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) will establish rules for testing and mitigation. The bill also recommends that school districts maintain and report radon test results to the State Board of Education.
