Illinois HB3097 mandates FAFSA completion for high school diploma eligibility.
HB3097 amends the School Code to require Illinois high school students to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or file a waiver to receive a diploma. Starting from the 2025-2026 school year, schools must provide time during the school day for students to complete the FAFSA or receive assistance. Students unable to meet these requirements due to extenuating circumstances may still graduate if they meet all other requirements and the school district has made a good faith effort to assist them.
