Illinois HB2666 mandates staggered terms for alderpersons in municipalities, excluding Chicago and Chicago Heights.
HB2666 amends the Illinois Municipal Code to require all municipalities to stagger the terms of their alderpersons. In cities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants, one alderperson from each even-numbered ward will serve a 2-year term, and one from each odd-numbered ward will serve a 4-year term. Successors will serve 4-year terms. This rule does not apply to the cities of Chicago and Chicago Heights. If a municipality has not already staggered its alderperson terms, the staggered system will take effect at the next regular election.
