Illinois HB2488 amends the Occupational Safety and Health Act to increase civil penalties for workplace safety violations. Public employers can face penalties up to $1,000 per day for continuing violations after citations are issued. Penalties for willful violations, plain indifference, or repeated violations can be up to $10,000 per violation. Serious violations, where there is a substantial probability of death or serious physical harm, can incur penalties up to $70,000 per violation. The Director must notify employers of proposed penalties within five days of issuing a citation.
