Illinois HB1373 amends the Criminal Code of 2012 to require law enforcement agencies to use the National Tracing Center of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' eTrace platform for firearm traces. This applies to firearms unlawfully possessed, used for unlawful purposes, recovered from crime scenes, believed to be used in crimes, or acquired as abandoned or discarded. Law enforcement must also submit evidence of recovered firearms to the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) or an Illinois State Police laboratory for processing.
