HB1237

SCH CD-PROHIBIT NATIVE AM NAME

Chamber Passed·4/10/25

Illinois HB1237 prohibits schools from using Native American names, logos, or mascots.

HB1237 amends the School Code to prohibit schools from using names, logos, or mascots that represent Native Americans. Schools must remove these from facilities during maintenance and avoid purchasing new items bearing such representations. Existing uniforms and materials purchased before the bill's effective date can still be used until September 1, 2028, provided the school selects a new name, logo, or mascot that does not violate the prohibition.
