Illinois HB1141 mandates coverage for medically necessary general anesthesia in health insurance policies, regardless of duration, starting January.

HB1141 requires group or individual accident and health insurance policies, and managed care plans, to cover medically necessary general anesthesia for any covered procedure, effective January 1, 2026. Medical necessity is determined by the attending anesthesiologist or licensed anesthesia provider. The bill also prohibits insurers from denying payment or reimbursement for anesthesia services solely because the duration of care exceeded a preset time limit.
