Hawaii SB550 establishes a landfill advisory committee to review and approve or deny applications for municipal solid waste landfill units. The bill prohibits the siting, construction, modification, or expansion of any solid waste landfill disposal unit on land near or above an aquifer. The Department of Health is directed to identify and map all drinking water aquifers and make these maps available to the public. The bill also mandates a buffer zone of at least one mile between landfills and the nearest residential, school, hotel, tourist accommodation, business, or hospital property line.
