Hawaii SB3025 establishes a program to acquire and forgive medical debt for eligible residents.

Hawaii SB3025 creates a medical debt acquisition and forgiveness program. The Office of Wellness and Resilience will acquire and forgive outstanding medical debt for individuals with a household income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level or those with a medical debt balance equal to or greater than 5% of their income. The program will start with the debt of 50,016 Hawaii residents already acquired by a medical debt collection and cancellation organization. The office may receive funds from the legislature, private sources, or federal grants to carry out this program.
