Hawaii SB2753 mandates denitrification capacity for new or modified wastewater systems near shorelines and on highly porous soils to protect coral.
Hawaii SB2753 aims to safeguard nearshore waters by requiring denitrification capacity for wastewater systems within 200 feet of shorelines and 1,200 feet in areas with highly porous soils. This capacity, defined as a minimum 50% nitrogen reduction, is necessary to prevent nitrogen pollution that harms coral reefs. The Department of Health will also reduce requirements for leach fields and wastewater systems with denitrification capacity. This Act takes effect upon approval.
