Hawaii HB360 aims to protect coral reefs around Oahu by limiting the amount of certain herbivorous fish species that can be caught. Specifically, it prohibits taking more than one uhu (parrotfish) per day and possessing more than one uhu or any other species at a time. It also bans taking spectacled parrotfish. The Division of Aquatic Resources must conduct population assessments of kala (bluespine unicornfish), nenue (chub), and uhu (parrotfish) every two years and report findings to the legislature. This Act takes effect July 1, 2025, and will be repealed June 30, 2035.
