Florida S1464 creates a three-year pilot program for food and plastic waste reduction in schools. The Department of Education, in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, will develop the program to be offered in up to 10% of schools starting in the 2027-2028 school year. The program includes partnerships with local nonprofits or food banks to redistribute edible food and compost organic waste. Schools will install waste sorting systems and replace single-use plastics with reusable serving ware.
