Tubman, born Araminta Ross, escaped slavery and later became a conductor on the Underground Railroad, leading missions that rescued approximately 70 enslaved people. She also served as a scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War, and led the Combahee River Raid, which liberated 700 enslaved people in South Carolina.
