Safe Staffing Saves Lives Act amends Medicare and Medicaid to set minimum staffing levels for nursing facilities.

The Safe Staffing Saves Lives Act amends titles XI, XVIII, and XIX of the Social Security Act to establish minimum staffing levels for registered nurses in nursing facilities and skilled nursing facilities under Medicare and Medicaid. Beginning January 1, 2029, skilled nursing facilities must provide 24-hour licensed nursing services and ensure a total minimum of 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Facilities that fail to meet these requirements face denial of further payments and recommendations for Secretary actions.
