WELLS Act requires hospitals to develop discharge plans for pregnant individuals as a condition of Medicare participation.

The WELLS Act, or Women Expansion of Learning and Labor Safety Act, amends title XVIII of the Social Security Act to mandate that hospitals participating in Medicare create discharge plans for pregnant individuals. These plans must include a clinical justification for discharge, an assessment of travel distance and time, verification of reliable transportation, identification of a backup hospital, and confirmation that the plan was reviewed and approved by a qualified medical professional.
