Fighting Fibers Act of 2025 mandates a study on microfibers and requires new washing machines to include microfiber filtration systems.
The Fighting Fibers Act of 2025 directs the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a nationwide study on microfibers, their sources, pathways, and impacts on human health and the environment. The study will also assess whether microfibers disproportionately affect environmental justice communities. The Act requires all new washing machines sold in the United States to include a microfiber filtration system, effective January 1, 2030. These systems must have a mesh size of no more than 100 micrometers or meet an alternative standard set by the EPA and the Department of Energy.
