The BOP Direct-Hire Authority Act allows the Bureau of Prisons Director to hire qualified candidates directly.

The BOP Direct-Hire Authority Act provides the Director of the Bureau of Prisons with the authority to appoint qualified candidates to any positions in the competitive service at Bureau of Prisons facilities. This authority bypasses certain civil service rules, except for specific sections. The direct hire authority will expire once 96 percent of the total number of competitive service positions at all Bureau of Prisons facilities are occupied.
