SB274

Automated license plate recognition systems.

Vetoed·10/1/25

Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) Data Accountability Act regulates ALPR systems in California.

The Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) Data Accountability Act amends the Civil Code to regulate ALPR systems. It mandates ALPR operators to maintain records of access to ALPR information, including date, time, license plate number, and username. ALPR operators must implement security measures to protect ALPR information. Public agencies must delete ALPR information not matching an authorized hot list within 60 days. The act also allows individuals harmed by ALPR violations to bring civil actions. The Department of Justice will audit ALPR operators and end-users annually.
