California SB1203 mandates that applicants for proprietary private security officer registration complete a course in the exercise of the power to arrest and the appropriate use of force. Security guards must also complete a course in the carrying and use of firearms, except for armored vehicle guards hired before January 1, 1977. The bill requires security guards to undergo 42 hours of training in security officer skills, including eight hours dedicated to practicing deescalation skills.
