The bill proposes to amend the California Constitution to allow state lawmakers to earn pension benefits for their legislative service.

The Legislative Diversification Act would repeal the prohibition on California state lawmakers earning pension benefits for their legislative service. It would require the Legislature to establish a retirement system for Members elected or serving on or after November 1, 2010. To be eligible for retirement benefits, a Member must serve at least 10 years in the Legislature. Members who serve fewer than 10 years may transfer their service credit to another public employees’ pension or retirement system.
