California AB56 mandates social media platforms to display a warning label about mental health risks for young users.
California AB56, known as the Social Media Warning Law, requires social media platforms to display a black box warning to users each day they access the platform. The warning states that social media is associated with significant mental health harms and has not been proven safe for young users. The warning must be displayed for at least 10 seconds when the user initially accesses the platform, again after three hours of cumulative active use, and then at least once per hour thereafter. The warning must occupy at least 25% of the screen.
