Alabama HB42 modifies reporting requirements for unclaimed motor vehicles, allowing immediate reporting after towing.
Alabama HB42 amends existing law to allow a person in possession of a towed motor vehicle to report the vehicle as unclaimed to the Department of Revenue immediately after towing. Previously, the report had to be made within five calendar days after the vehicle was considered unclaimed. The bill also mandates that the person in possession of the vehicle must notify the owner and lienholder of record, if any, within five calendar days of reporting the vehicle as unclaimed. Failure to report or notify results in forfeiture of claims and liens for the vehicle's storage.
